چکیده

A Multi Layered Display TM (MLD) uses depth to alter the salience of information. This study considered how the use of depth might influence cursor positioning. As pointing movements to targets may be influenced by flanking nontargets, a MLD was used in an attempt to reduce any distracting effects of non-targets. Participants were 14 skilled computer users who moved a computer cursor using a mouse to virtual targets at two distances in the presence of flanking non-targets on the same or different layer, before or after the target. Cursors avoided the non-targets. Kinematic analysis of cursor trajectories implied less interference in initial cursor trajectories when non-targets were on a different layer. Enhancing target and flanker separation using the MLD reduced the distracting effects of flankers upon the early “planned” part of cursor trajectories. For the latter part of cursor trajectories a MLD may reduce a perceived potential for impact with non-targets.

Investigating Pointing Tasks across Angularly Coupled Display Areas

Pointing tasks are a crucial part of today’s graphical user interfaces. They are well understood for flat displays and most prominently are modeled through Fitts’ Law. For novel displays (e.g., curved displays with multi-purpose areas), however, it remains unclear whether such models for predicting user performance still hold – in particular when pointing is performed across differently oriente...

Understanding the Effect of User Position on Ray-Pointing Techniques for Large Scale Displays

Large-scale displays support interaction scenarios where the user is physically unrestrained. However, standard input devices – such as keyboards and mice – are cumbersome and might restrain user mobility in large scale displays. Pointing has been suggested as an interaction technique adequate for such scenarios. However, little is known regarding what human factors affect pointing performance....

Precision Pointing for Ultra-High-Resolution Wall Displays

Ultra-high-resolution wall displays have proven useful for displaying large quantities of information, but lack appropriate interaction techniques to manipulate the data efficiently. We explore the limits of existing modeless remote pointing techniques, originally designed for lower resolution displays, and show that they do not support high-precision pointing on such walls. We then consider te...

LumiPoint: Multi-User Laser-Based Interaction on Large Tiled Displays

Projection technology has made large tiled displays an exciting feature of advanced visualization systems. However, one challenge to using such systems effectively is the development of input technologies that comfortably allow collaborative interaction with the displayed data on these large surfaces. We have developed an input system that allows any number of users to interact simultaneously w...

In this paper, we describe a nui-based application using a Microsoft Kinect. The system displays a digital representation of a university building, where users can navigate virtually through contactless gestures. Users can step up and couple their hand with a virtual mouse cursor to navigate through the program such that hand movements to the right lead to cursor movements to the right for exam...
